when you ask them the interest rate on the deal.....when they say its a flat 6 its really 12% APR and your finance is going to cost a fortune, twice now Ive come across this misleading bit of information from your friendly car salesman.

If you have to finance from a dealer then you%26#039;re in stum buddy.
Every dealer should give you a final price and rate in their quote. the figure is the APR rate as you identify and I believe that they HAVE to make this clear to you and if you change your mind you have 28 days to back out... no pressure should be applied to you on the forecourt so to speak.
Better to get a personal loan from any of the biggies, even the banks.
If you have a set amount a month you can afford then go for a 12 month loan which meets your repayments and then do this for a number of years (taking cash and trade in to the dealers or selling private and buying private). The amount you owe is probably going to be the same over 5 years, but you can actually chose to not do this one or more years if your circumstances change. You can also get to apoint where you can hold onto a car for two or more years. but by doing this annually the cars you trade back do not lose too much value.
If you are going for a rental doodah, then think long terms pain over short term gain, you usually end up having to stump up loads to buy a car worth not much or walk away having rented at a shocking rate.
When you pitch up, act cool. remember he has to sell cars and you can keep on driving the piece of cr*p you have for another week.
Cash is king with most dealers unless we%26#039;re into the 10s of Ks when a bankers draft is as good.
At all times be prepared to walk away and go somewhere else and even if they have the car you want at the price you think is right, go home, go to bed and go back later... second only to your house and maybe your wedding you%26#039;ll pay for nothing else bigger than a good car in the UK.
HP CHECK, dont use theirs, use yours.
AA/RAC Check, ask if they mind and then get one.
Go on line and get some checks done, these require a credit card but are worth it.
If you are trading in then use Glass%26#039;s guide on pricing.
Insist on a test drive and one that goes on all types of roads: residental street, main roads, dual carriage ways ideally with a roundabout and slip.
Check for normal driving and then also (ask permission and dont go overboard) brisk acceleration down the slip and late breaking to the roundabout. this will give you a feel for how the car drives. If you can find a nice flat piece of road, go for a really light touch on the wheel to check for crabbing and also keep light fingers under some breaking to check for pulling. Any dealer that objects to this kind of check is probably not worth dealing with, sorry, I know you were talking money.
good luck...
