What should I do with my car when I move to NYC???

I am planning to move to NYC at the beginning of January but I have a problem. I live on the West coast and bought a Mazda Miata 1 year ago, financed and i still owe about 11k on it. Now, I know that I can%26#039;t take this car with me to NYC because of obvious reasons (not a winter car, too expensive to keep, not too safe to drive across country, etc)..now what can i do? Do i trade it in for something else and still make payments and find someplace with decent parking (Queens or Long Island maybe?).or do I trade it in, store it in Upstate NY where I%26#039;m from....any ideas???

just moved there myself and faced a similar problem. If you can, you should check the area around where you are moving and find about about parking (if there is street parking, maybe garage parking) luckly where i moved to (long island city... 5-10 min from times square by subway) there is a lot of open street parking with no limitations, also my apartment building has garage parking (monthly payments of i think $200)... if there is nothing for your car then I would suggest trying to see it for the 11k you have left of payments. Good Luck!!

Try to sell it before you move. The only place WORSE to drive than on the West Coast- is anywhere NEAR N.Y.C. (%26amp; don%26#039;t even THINK about bringing your car into the City itself! :0 ) OR- maybe you can sell it %26quot;at auction%26quot; on ebay! If you can limit the Sale to somewhere in the State you%26#039;re from- you might be able to get rid of it- before you move! It%26#039;s worth a try! Good luck! :)

There are reasonable areas for keeping a car if you live outside Manhattan. Even there a few places exist, such as Inwood (northern tip of the island). Most of Staten Island actually requires a car, and Queens is mostly car friendly. So are some parts of Brooklyn, and a bit of the Bronx. If you bring the Mazda (or any other car) to NYC and re-register it, New York State will hit you with a tax on the assumed sales value of the car along with the registration fee.

With so much still owed on the car, you are likely to take a huge loss if you sell it (and check the purchase agreement--you may not have the right to sell it until it is paid off). Driving cross country can be a pain or quite interesting, depending on how you approach it.

There are plenty of neighborhoods in the outer boroughs (Queens, Brooklyn) where you can keep a car on the street. The trade-off is you have a longer commute into the city. The farther you get from Manhattan, the easier parking is (more or less).

I wouldn%26#039;t live in Manhattan, unless you%26#039;re making six figures and can afford a garage.

There are also plenty of neighborhoods you can live in where you won%26#039;t need a car and you may be better off without one. Most areas have alternate side parking rules and you will have to move your car at least twice a week or get a $45 ticket. Areas such as Williamsburg, Red Hook, Long Island City, Park Slope, Astoria, are 20 min from Manhattan by train and the only reason you would need a car is to leave town. There%26#039;s also Zip Cars you can rent which are very affordable.

Like they say, it depends where you are moving to. Manhattan, best place to learn driving, but owning a car is a pain in the rear; parking. IN Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, could do without a car, but rather have one. Station Island, need a car. Nassau and Weschester County, car is a must. Northeast NJ, car is must, but insurance is higher than the 5 boroughs.
