Do I have to pay a car dealership for a mistake in paperwork they made six months ago?

I bought a used car in October of last year. Since I drove off the lot I have been back twice to pay for things that they said they made mistakes on in the original paperwork. I recently got a notice in the mail (suppossedly a third notice although I never got a first and second) saying %26quot;The amount of license fees collected on your contract are not sufficient to cover the license and renewal by the DMV - Collected: $15, Required: $259, Balanced owed: $163%26quot;

First of all the math doesn%26#039;t even make sense and second, why should I have to pay for a mistake they made in the final paperwork. We all signed and were done with it. Plus it has been six months... why did they just now send me this notice? I feel that this dealership is not going to stop asking me for more money. What can I or do I do? (the dealer is not the lienholder, I am financed through my credit union)

I would ignore requests for money and report the company to the Better Business Bureau.

If you have a license then heck with them. Their error their loss, especially if this has already gone on several times.

Edit: If you have a license then the fee was paid.. they don%26#039;t hand out licenses on credit. The state doesn%26#039;t care who paid it. The dealer can not stop you from renewing the license.

Edit: I don%26#039;t think they can do anything. If it was me I would just ignore them. Screen your calls for a while, throw any letters away. If they start being too big of a pain in the butt send them a cease and desist letter threatening to get a restraining order. Make them take you to court (which they won%26#039;t do...you have a CONTRACT!!)

If your going to hire a laywer you may as well go pay them the money...it will be cheaper.

Sounds like you want to tread softly here; if this isn%26#039;t paid you may not be able to re-register the car. I%26#039;d talk to a local atty; but odds are it%26#039;ll cost as much to remedy legally as the fees and may not win.

See if they will split the difference. 1/2 a loaf

Read the written contract. If it says: dealer provides registered car for $15 registration fee, you are good to go. If it says: buyer agrees to pay all registration fees, you still owe them money.

Read the contract.

they said they sent two other notices....so they have been trying to inform you since you bought it.

most likely, the vehicle%26#039;s registration was not up to date when you bought it. plus when you buy it from someone else, you have to pay some transfer fees with the DMV. when you buy it new, most dealers included those fees into what you pay so you do not actually have to go to the DMV. plus if the registration is out of date (for a long period) you would also be paying the back registration (last years too).

they should have had the correct information for you when you signed for the car. but if the DMV does not get the full registration fees, then the registration is out of date. depending upon how long that is, you vehicle could be towed and you could be cited for it if you get pulled over by the police.

contact the DMV (phone or in person) to check on the registration status of the vehicle. if its in person, take the paperwork from the dealer and inquire with them. they should at least be able to tell you whether its paid in full or it hasn%26#039;t been paid.

the paperwork you signed with the dealer (you should have a copy of it) should detail how much the registration fee and other associated DMV fees are.

$15 for registration isn%26#039;t correct. the DMV always wants more...the $259 sounds a lot more DMV like in fees.

Persons to contact, and order to contact them:

1) Lawyer (Contract and/or Property Law)

2) The DMV

3) The Dealership

4) The BBB

Once the final papers are signed, they can not touch you on THEIR math mistake...unless they can prove that you knew they had made a mistake and not brought it up.

Good Luck!
