Here are the details:
My husband is in the Army and is supposed to get out in August 2008. I am 4 months pregnant and due in March 2008. We have an 11 year old car with 155,000 miles on it. It needs a new/rebuilt transmission, 4 new tires, brake work, and there is an overheating problem. To fix it, it would cost around three or four thousand dollars.
The truck we are looking at is a 2007 Toyota Tacoma which we will try to get for 23K or 24K. We only have about $2,000 for a down payment. The rest would need to be financed.
We have little debt. The highest debt we have is about $1600 for furniture which we are paying off until January 2009.
We just don%26#039;t know if we should buy this car now or not with a baby on the way and my husband getting out of the Army.
What do you think?
Should we buy a car or wait?
You definately need something dependable when the baby is here...and you need something dependable while you are pregnant... if you can afford it then I say get it...I have a 2006 Tacoma and its a great vehicle.. get the 4 door if you get it... we just had a baby 3 weeks ago and the 4 door has the room.
Good luck...and tell your Husband thank you for being in our armed service.. some of us actually appreciate it.
Should we buy a car or wait?
You are going to need a reliable car because you have to make sure you are not stranded with the baby in the car.
Should we buy a car or wait?
You have not mentioned your family income! If you have alternative to manage things without a car and if your income does not provide you to buy a car, donot go for it and vice versa.
Should we buy a car or wait?
I would wait until you have at least 10% of the car%26#039;s price to put down as a downpayment; however, since you have a baby on the way- you might want to consider going ahead and buying the new car so you have something dependable.

Long-term there are three good answers but it depends on your situation.
Good idea #1 (Better if you will stay near the base when you get out)
Spend the money fix the car that you have if it is Japanese because 155,000 miles is nothing. Saving money is important and as a father of 4 kids under 10. Babies require money to care for but any unreasonable amount. Your biggest expenses will be daycare, baby hygeine care and clothes which could reasonably be $200 + daycare costs. You could be better off trading in your current car and buying something Japanese for about $5,000 which will last another 10-15 years with good maintenance plus have your finances free for the baby. The least expensive %26quot;next best thing%26quot; to keeping your present car.
Good Idea #2 (Better if you want the reliability of new but not the payment)
Buying %26quot;near new%26quot; certified used car such as a 1-3 year old truck with 20,000-30,000 miles on it. It will still smell new, you get the balance of the warranty and you pay $5,000-$7,000 less than the same newer model with 90% of the %26quot;new%26quot; still in it. I purchased a Honda Certified 2005 Accord Hybrid in 2007 with 22,000 miles on it for $18,900 when it was $33,000 new two years earlier. My car still smells new, it is awesome and saved me a load of money. I will put about 300,000 miles on this car before I get rid of it.
Good idea #3 (Good if your husband has a good job lined up after the military)
As ex-military I know what it%26#039;s like to get out and feel like a fish out of water. If he has a good job lined up or he is in school now preparing himself it may not be a bad idea to buy new if you stick with it long-term until it%26#039;s paid off. You of course will want to keep your debt as low as possible as he transitions out of the military and looks for something that pays well. Not my first reccomendation (Good idea #2 is) but could be good for you and your family.
Should we buy a car or wait?
you need a dependable vehicle for the family.. period.. Figure your finances, and decided if u can afford that vehicle, or maybe something else. get rid of this other one, it will nickel and dim you to death.. and tell your husband thank you for serving us and this country..
Should we buy a car or wait?
maybe you should look at something a little cheaper maybe around $12,000 believe me Ive bought 2 brand new cars and its not worth paying 500 a month for 5 years for it ,you can get a decent used car
