Just graduated from college and got a job. What kind of car should I buy?

I just graduated college with a degree in Finance. I%26#039;ve got a job lined up that will pay about 35k. I%26#039;m looking for a car right now, and definitly don%26#039;t want to go over $10,000. I%26#039;d like to stay somewhere in between $4,000-$8,000. I%26#039;m considering a Honda Civic or Accord because they are reliable and get good milage. However, I%26#039;m also considering a Jeep Grand Cherokee because I like the extras and the style. I%26#039;m looking for something that will look decent, not require a whole lot of maintenance, and stay running for at least two years. What kind of models should I look for? What year? What milage? Anything else I should look for when car shopping? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

I like the idea of getting a Honda, but you may not find anything with less than 75k miles in that price range. In my opinion, you really shouldn%26#039;t buy a car with more than 75k, regardless of brand, if you have the means to buy a car with less than 75k.

In that price range a Ford Focus or Taurus is available, as well as a nice 02 or newer Hyundai Sonata. All three of these vehicles get high marks for quality (see consumer reports or edmunds), and they can all be had for about $8k with very low miles.

I have to say I admire your financial discipline -- many recent grads go out and buy a very expensive car and end up being obligated to a big payment. Your choice to spend $4-$8k is very smart.

As far as the Jeep goes, you%26#039;re just buying a problem for that price...they%26#039;re not terribly reliable or efficient, and insurance is higher than average.

I would go with a Civic or accord. I have a friend who%26#039;s father owns a towing company and the number one car they tow, due to break downs is the Cherokee!

Acura Legend

Luxury, Reliability, Power.

I suggest a Hyundai; I bought one in 1990, and I really liked it. It got great mileage, could be gotten with plenty of extras (although my budget didn%26#039;t allow it at the time), and required very little maintenance other than the usual oil/filter changes. If you can get diesel, even better - you can run your car off renewable resources. Jeep Cherokees are nice, but they get AWFUL gas mileage.

Stick with the reliable Honda, till you get the job established. Don%26#039;t go spending your money before you%26#039;ve earned it.

id say for your budget, honda would be a good call...you can get a decent used jeep for that price, but the catch is the new ones are worth that low for a reason, poor reliability and issues with the vehicle make it a poor choice for a used vehicle...i dont know what financial situation you are in, but i would go with a cheaper car for now until you get settled, then get the nicer stylish jeep that you want...plus with gas prices now, jeep is last on the list...honda/toyota should be a first pick

if you prefer reliability go with the Toyota, honda line up..

Dude stay away from Honda%26#039;s or Toyota%26#039;s. They hold their value which is bad for you. You want a car that doesnt hold its value so you can get it cheap. Understand? IE; you%26#039;ll spend more money for a honda and get less car (high miles for 8K).

Get an american. American are just as good and have as good mpg. Ford Focus. Cheap. 30+ mpg. 8k will get you one within 2 yrs old with 40-50k miles on it. If u were to get a honda for 8k; it would have close to 100k miles on it.

Chevy Cobalts are ok. Any entry level american is good for you. God bless. Congrats on the job!

First of all...Congratulations!!! You seem like a very level headed person. Personally, I would recommend the Honda Accord, it does have some extras and gets great gas mileage. With gas prices as they are, right now would not be a good time to think of something like a Jeep Cherokee. Be sure it is a year or two old even three would be good. That way someone else has already discovered any problems it may have had. Be sure your mileage is around 60,000, it could be higher but not over 100,000.

I wish you the best of luck with your new job and your car shopping, (car shopping is not a fun thing to do...ugh!!)
