Yes they can because it legally belongs to someone else. You have not committed a crme, since you bought it in %26quot;good faith.%26quot; If icame from a garage or private seller, they may also not have know about the HP.

Either way, the vendor owes you any money you lose, and you should take them to court for it. Then someone may owe them and thus action should continue up the chain until everyone is reimbursed.

Note, neither a receipt nor the V5 registration document necessarily indicate who legally owns a car. If you buy on HP your name will go on the V5, but in fact the HP company are the legal owners.
